Hike-in tent-only campsite A special highlight of Fort Drum Marsh Conservation Area is a picturesque wooden boardwalk that meanders through a blackwater hardwood swamp featuring cypress and cedar trees and sabal palms, leading to hiking trails and primitive campsites, including Campsite 3 on Hog Island.To reach Hike-In Campsite 3, you must hike to Hog Island on the B spur off the yellow trail, about 8/10ths of a mile from the Horseshoe Lake parking area. This remote campsite is by reservation only and only accessible on foot. Note, Fort Drum Marsh is seasonally flooded, so there are times the trail into Hog Island is completely under water. By providing vehicle make, model and license plate number when making a reservation, the vehicle permit allows the reservation holder to drive a vehicle past the Lake Cara gate to the Horseshoe Lake parking area, park overnight in the lot (maximum two cars), and hike into Hog Island to reach Campsite 3. Important: Vehicle make, model and license plate number are required for any vehicle that will be parked overnight in the Horseshoe Lake parking area. Violators are subject to motor vehicle trespass citation and/or towing at owner's expense. Without a valid vehicle permit, you are welcome to park at Lake Cara and use the pedestrian entrance to hike to the campsite. Campsite 3 must be reserved at least 48 hours in advance. The campsite is equipped with a fire ring, bench seating and a single tent platform. Maximum occupancy is six people.Recreational activities at Fort Drum Marsh include hiking, picnicking, horseback riding, fishing, bicycling, wildlife viewing, paddling and seasonal hunting.The main entrance to Fort Drum is located on the south side of State Road 60, approximately 18 miles west of I-95 and 10 miles east of Yeehaw Junction (main entrance lat/long: 80° 45' 59.06"W / 27° 38' 29619" N).
