I honestly cannot understand how this state park has anything less than a perfect rating because this place is absolutely incredible. From the moment you get there you realize just how massive and beautiful the park really is. The scenery throughout the entire area is unreal and everywhere you turn feels like something straight out of a postcard. The only reason I could possibly see for lower ratings would be accessibility since parts of the park are harder to reach, but the areas that are accessible are beyond worth the trip by themselves. There is so much to do here that you could spend multiple days exploring and still not see everything. The hiking trails are beautiful, the camping areas are well worth staying at, and there are scenic overlooks and photo spots everywhere you look. Whether you enjoy hiking, wildlife, photography, fishing, hunting, or just getting away from everything for a while, this park has something for you. It honestly feels like one of those places where you can completely disconnect and just appreciate how amazing nature really is. For photographers especially, this place is a dream because every trail and every turn gives you another incredible view. The nature center in Eagle River was also an awesome addition and really helped complete the experience. Out of all the state parks I have visited, this one stands out as my favorite by far and it is somewhere I try to come back to anytime I get the chance.

Chugach State Park is a stunning natural expanse surrounding Anchorage, encompassing over 495,000 acres of rugged mountains, glaciers, alpine lakes, and dense forests. Its proximity to the city makes it both accessible and wild, offering photographers and outdoor enthusiasts a chance to experience Alaska’s dramatic landscapes without venturing deep into remote backcountry.

The park’s trails cater to all levels, from short scenic hikes to challenging climbs such as Flattop Mountain, which rewards visitors with sweeping panoramas of Anchorage, Turnagain Arm, and the surrounding Chugach Range. Lakes and rivers throughout the park provide reflections of snow-capped peaks, creating spectacular compositions for landscape photography.

Wildlife abounds, including moose, bears, eagles, and mountain goats, giving photographers opportunities for wildlife shots in a natural setting.

Seasonal changes dramatically transform the park: winter blankets the peaks and trails in snow, summer brings vibrant wildflowers and verdant forests, and autumn paints the valleys in rich golds and reds.

Chugach State Park is a perfect blend of accessibility, rugged wilderness, and photographic potential, making it an essential destination for capturing the essence of Alaska’s majestic beauty.

I don’t know how this state park got anything less than 5 stars but it is definitely worth your time. Accessibility can be the only thing I can think of. The state park is huge and a big portion of it isn’t accessible. The parts that are, are absolutely stunning. Multiple hiking trails, camping areas, picnics, photo opportunities, and scenic views throughout. If you like the outdoors and stunning scenery, this park has what you’re looking for. You can do almost anything here as there are ample hunting and fishing locations. This is a photographers dream! The nature center in Eagle River tops it off as the best state park I e ever been in. I visit here as often as I can.

Went wild blueberry picking here and it was terrific! Lots of blueberries 🫐 everywhere! Such a beautiful area. Easy to get to and accessable paths to different areas so you can spread out and enjoy larges spaces to pick blueberries. We came late in the season and there was still plenty to be picked.

Beautiful expansive place to hike and explore. Oh the places you could go. Glaciers, snow capped peaks, breathtaking views, unexplored territory, and so much more. This is a truly unique state park. It is so fun to get beyond where most hikers even travel and to see new things. Ever changing, and takes my breath away every time I see something new.
